I didn't do much research on Friday or the weekend, except for chats with Lang and Dalcanton about their respective technical issues. Dalcanton's is to infer the dust distribution in M31 from the colors and magnitudes of the red giants. It seems easy enough, but when you are doing dust, and you are letting it live in three dimensions, some nasty integrals appear; integrate numerically or use simple distributions with analytic results or approximations?
i ran into this once with Martin Schwarzschild, we were after the kinematics, how much dust obscuration would affect the measures kinematics. It's an ApJ paper around 1984 or so. I remember doing some integrals for this.
